Internal departmental correspondence obtained by Gript reveals that at least 35 per cent of Help to Buy (HTB) applicants were foreign-born, as mortgage industry experts warn of organised abuse of the government-backed scheme.
The figures directly contradict previous responses provided to Gript by both Revenue and the Department of Finance, citing the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997, and stating that nationality figures are not gathered as part of the Help to Buy application process, as the data is “not relevant to the statutory eligibility criteria.”
