David Charles Potter
Sharon, VT – David C. Potter, 74, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
Born on August 16, 1951, in Randolph, Vermont, David was the son of Roland E. and Phyllis (McDonald) Potter. He grew up in Sharon, attended school there before graduating from South Royalton High School with the Class of 1970, and spent his entire life in the community he loved.
On November 27, 1974, David married the love of his life, Valerie Johnson. Together they built a beautiful life in Sharon, raising their two children and sharing more than 51 years of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another.
Dave was a man who never shied away from hard work. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at Charlie Kelton’s in West Hartford from 1968 to 1985 before opening his own business, D C Potter and son. He also spent many years logging. Whether fixing equipment, cutting wood, or helping a neighbor or friend, Dave was known for his skill, determination, and willingness to lend a hand.
He found happiness in the simple things that made Vermont home. Whether he was spending time with his boating friends, on Lake Champlain, aboard his beloved boat, Old Spice, or hunting at Camp Nowhere, in the NE Kingdom, where his family would gather every year and celebrate a tradition with all generations of family. He also enjoyed snowmobiling through the winter woods, and making maple syrup at the Fay Brook Sugar Shack surrounded by family and friends. It was one of his many happy places he loved. Dave was happiest outdoors. He was also proud to be the last remaining member of the original Sharon Horseshoe League.
David dedicated much of his life to serving others. He faithfully served with the Sharon Fire Department for decades, including 25 years as Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Sharon Up and Downers Snowmobile Club and the Sharon F. & A.M. His leadership, commitment, and willingness to answer the call-day or night-earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters and his community.
Those who knew Dave will remember far more than his accomplishments. They will remember his quick wit, his wonderful sense of humor, and his contagious laugh that could fill a room and make everyone around him smile. He had a way of making people feel welcome, sharing a story or joke, teasing those he loved, and finding joy even in the ordinary moments. His laughter was unforgettable, and his kindness and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, David loved his family. He leaves behind his wife, Valerie Potter of Sharon; his son, Daniel Potter of Sharon; his daughter, Tammy Weinberg of Raymond, Maine; and his four cherished grandchildren, Jamie, Kylee, Ethan, and Lily, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his mother, Phyllis Potter of Randolph Center; his brothers, Dale Potter and Darryl Potter, both of Sharon; his sister, Darlene Miller of Tunbridge; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, Dave’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he faithfully served, and the countless memories filled with laughter, friendship, and love. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Memorial calling hours will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 VT Route 110, Chelsea, Vermont.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sharon Fire House, 5808 Route 14, Sharon, Vermont.
A private burial will take place at a later date at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to honor David’s memory by lending a helping hand to a neighbor, spending time outdoors with family, or making a memorial contribution to the Sharon Volunteer Fire Dept-just as David did throughout his life.
