The final installation under the Emergency Communications Network project was completed earlier in the month in Bikarej, Arno Atoll.
The World Bank-funded Pacific Resilience Program Phase II (PREP II) is managing the project on behalf of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) contracted to undertake the installation and enhancement works.
The installation of the communications gear strengthens emergency communication capacity in Bikarej and will improve coordination with NDMO and other emergency authorities during disasters and urgent situations.
“Reliable communication is especially important for remote island communities, where distance and limited connectivity can make emergency response more challenging,” said the project in a release.
“The new ECN equipment will help Bikarej maintain stronger communication links and request assistance when it is needed most.”
Completion of the Bikarej installation marks an important milestone in ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness, community resilience, and emergency communications across the Marshall Islands.
