The leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mama Kandeh has joined the National People’s Party (NPP) Grand Alliance after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties and meeting President Adama Barrow at the State House.
The development marks a significant shift in The Gambia’s political landscape ahead of the next presidential election, with the GDC becoming the latest opposition party to align with the governing NPP.
Addressing supporters before heading to the State House, Kandeh confirmed his decision to join the alliance with President Barrow’s party.
Supporters of both the NPP and GDC attended the ceremony alongside cabinet ministers, senior government officials and members of the NPP Grand Alliance.
Speaking at the event, NPP Deputy Spokesperson Seedy SK Njie described the agreement as a landmark moment in Gambian politics, saying Kandeh undertook extensive consultations before reaching the decision.
“The consultation Mama did is history in Gambian politics,” Njie said. “He first started at the grassroots where he met the regional leaders and the Council of Elders, who all agreed.”
Njie added that although Kandeh had indicated there was no personal agreement between himself and President Barrow because “they are brothers,” the two political parties negotiated and agreed on the terms of cooperation.
“Kandeh said there is no agreement between him and President Adama Barrow because they are brothers. But between the parties, they agreed and both produced a draft. I am happy to report that up to today we preserved your instruction,” Njie told supporters.
The Memorandum of Understanding formalises political cooperation between the NPP and the GDC as the ruling party continues to strengthen its alliance ahead of the country’s next electoral cycle.
President Barrow later received Kandeh and his delegation at the State House, where the alliance was formally announced following the signing of the agreement.
The alliance is expected to reshape the political landscape as preparations gather pace for the next presidential election.
