Doctors, WASCO workers secure deals as longstanding labour disputes resolved

Two long-standing industrial relations matters involving the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) and the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) have been resolved following the signing of collective agreements facilitated by the Department of Labour, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Department of Labour, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs, the agreements were signed on July 27. They were described by Acting Deputy Labour Commissioner Nicolai Lansiquot as significant milestones in the Department’s efforts to promote industrial stability and constructive labour relations.

One agreement was signed between the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) and MHMC, bringing to a close a long-running matter that the Department said had prompted threats of industrial action by medical professionals.

Under the agreement, doctors and physicians employed at the medical institution will begin receiving their negotiated allowances and benefits from this month.

Lansiquot said the agreement represents “an important step in safeguarding industrial peace within the country’s healthcare sector and ensuring continuity of service delivery to the public”.

The Department also oversaw the signing of a collective agreement between WASCO and the Civil Service Association (CSA), the bargaining agent for the company’s employees.

Under that agreement, employees will receive a six per cent salary increase over the 2022–2024 triennium, along with a range of negotiated allowances and benefits.

According to the Department, the agreement resolves another long-standing industrial relations matter and reflects the commitment of both parties to constructive engagement.

The Department said officials facilitated discussions in both matters, with all parties participating in negotiations described as cordial, respectful and solution-oriented.

Labour Minister Emma Hippolyte welcomed the agreements, saying they demonstrate the value of dialogue between employers, employees, trade unions and government.

“I am extremely pleased with the successful signing of these two collective agreements, both of which address matters that have been outstanding for some time. These outcomes demonstrate what can be achieved when employers, employees, trade unions and government engage in meaningful dialogue and negotiations in good faith. The amicable resolution of these issues not only benefits the workers involved but also contributes to the continued stability and peaceful industrial relations climate that Saint Lucia enjoys,” Hippolyte said.

She also commended the parties involved and praised the Labour Department for its role in facilitating constructive labour-management relations.
