The government is continuously working to fulfil Tisza’s commitments and to create a genuinely functioning and humane Hungary, guided throughout by the aim of ensuring the everyday safety, livelihoods and dignity of Hungarians — said Prime Minister Péter Magyar at Monday’s session of the National Assembly, before the agenda.

The Prime Minister elaborated that the summer of 2026 will be remembered as the summer when democratic politics, public debate and democratic civic life returned, when people once again became engaged in what is happening in public affairs, what the government and their representatives are doing, and how that is changing their lives.

Speaking about their decisions, Péter Magyar announced that from 1 September, VAT on prescription medicines will be abolished, and there is virtually no household that will not be affected by this decision. Around 4 million people in Hungary regularly take doctor-prescribed medication, and many have already found themselves unable to afford to fill a prescription they needed, he said.

He noted that this decision applies to everyone, and that those who take more or more expensive medicines will see significant savings as a result.

A school-start support payment of 100,000 forints has also been introduced for children in need, affecting approximately 400,000 children, he pointed out.

He argued that while it is possible to debate whether the school-start support is precisely targeted at those in need, no such debate was even possible during the 16 years of Fidesz governance — because there was no school-start support at all.

He also touched on the fact that the VAT on firewood will be reduced from 27 to 5 percent, because families who heat with firewood had until now been left out of the utility cost reduction scheme.

He said that the previous government spoke about the utility cost reduction as if every Hungarian family had been protected by it, when in fact those who heat with wood were left out, even though it is typically lower-income households that heat with wood. Now they too will be included in the utility cost reduction scheme, he added.

With these decisions, they also want to eliminate the injustice of oligarchs being able to enrich themselves, in the middle of Europe, from money taken from millions of Hungarians, said Péter Magyar.

Fidesz as a party is beyond saving, the Prime Minister declared.

The politician said that in Băile Tușnad, Viktor Orbán’s “annual explanation of the world” had descended into farce and tedium, with the “fallen Prime Minister” offering no fruitful ideas but instead explaining his own defeat “in an increasingly murky political delirium,” while “seeking in Hungary’s economic failure the opportunity for his own personal comeback.”

“Do you think it is acceptable for a Hungarian politician — in this case Viktor Orbán — to be rooting for inflation to run rampant in Hungary, as it did for years under his failed governance?” the Prime Minister asked, raising the question of what kind of leader sees the precondition for his own return to power “in the potential suffering of Hungarian families or in his country’s decline.”

“What kind of political community tolerates a leader like this — one who has already failed?” said Péter Magyar, before turning his words to the Fidesz MPs and declaring that “what your cowardly leader and you have done is a disgrace, a disgrace, a disgrace.”

As an example, he pointed to the applause they give when Viktor Orbán “talks about a Tisza government and a bedbug infestation,” and compares the sworn-in cabinet to Hitler’s Germany.

The prime minister raised the question: why does no one ask that if Viktor Orbán is such a smart, capable leader, why is it that “Fidesz has not stood this poorly in 30 years” — given that four-fifths of Hungarians clearly reject the policies of the former governing party, why the budget deficit is breaking historic records, and why Hungarians are dying five years earlier than other Europeans.

According to his words, the Fidesz members “have earned their political fate and deserve no sympathy whatsoever.” The “I wasn’t there, I didn’t know about it” tour can finally come to an end; no one believes you anymore — Péter Magyar addressed the MPs of the former governing party, saying that “decision by decision, you have consciously chosen and continue to choose the moral low point, where party loyalty matters more than the homeland, protecting the leader matters more than reality, and regaining power matters more than the safety of Hungarian families.”

“Your voters simply do not deserve this,” he declared, stressing that it is not true that the Orbán system fell because of young people who do not understand the world — as there is no social group today “where Fidesz leads, or even comes close to the Tisza Party” in popularity.

The prime minister spent several minutes listing cases linked to the previous government, summarising that there are cases involving 1,300 billion forints of public funds in which criminal complaints have been filed, investigations have been launched, or serious questions have arisen. He noted that this sum would be enough to pay the back-to-school support grant to Hungarian families for 32 years, until 2058.

Fidesz-KDNP wants every Hungarian to forget the past 16 years — the secret government decrees, the hundreds of billions distributed without competitive tender, the private empires built from public funds, and the state treasury emptied before the election, he said, adding that Tisza will not allow this, and will make the facts public, revealing the decisions, the decision-makers, and the beneficiaries.

The prime minister stated that they will present the Orbán legacy, which is more horrific than anyone had expected.

He added that it is also for this reason that it is a historic step for the National Assembly to vote this week on the establishment of the National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Office.

It is also their task, he continued, to build a Hungary where oversight bodies genuinely oversee. He stated that the selection of Dávid Szeverényi as the new president of the Government Control Office and the nomination of Pál Sonnevend as a constitutional judge are about ensuring that the heads of state institutions are once again filled by competent, honest, independently minded people — those who serve the law and the country and resist political pressure.
