Bangladesh is considering investments in South Sudan’s renewable energy, electricity generation and dam infrastructure as the two countries seek to strengthen economic cooperation.

A Bangladeshi investment delegation led by General Shamim Kamal held talks with South Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, in Juba on Monday to explore investment opportunities in the country’s energy sector.

According to a Monday post on the official Facebook page of  the Ministry of Energy and Dams, the discussions focused on attracting foreign investment and expanding cooperation between South Sudan and Bangladesh.

The Bangladeshi delegation expressed interest in entering the South Sudanese market and investing in various energy-related projects, while ministry officials presented available opportunities in renewable energy, power generation and dam development.

South Sudan remains one of the countries with the lowest electricity access rates in the East African Community and globally. Millions of South Sudanese rely on fuel generators, charcoal and other traditional energy sources, while access to reliable electricity remains limited, particularly outside major urban centres.

Despite having significant natural resources and potential for renewable energy, including solar power, the country’s electricity infrastructure remains underdeveloped. The government has identified energy development as a key priority for economic growth, industrial expansion and improved public services.

Minister Agok Makur Kur assured the Bangladeshi delegation that the government is committed to creating a favourable investment environment and providing the necessary support for foreign investors.

The Ministry said investment in renewable energy, electricity generation and dam infrastructure would help increase power supply, support businesses and contribute to South Sudan’s long-term development goals.

The engagement comes as South Sudan continues efforts to attract international partnerships to strengthen its energy sector and reduce the country’s dependence on limited power sources.
