Goldey-Beacom College outlines campus jobs, tuition assistance and other options that can help students manage remaining education expenses

WILMINGTON, Del. — Scholarships, grants, loans and other financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of attending college, but many students are still left with tuition balances and expenses for housing, books, transportation, food and other necessities.

Goldey-Beacom College is encouraging students to explore additional opportunities that can help them earn money, lower costs and gain professional experience while completing their education.

The college recently outlined six options students may consider after receiving their financial aid packages.

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is a need-based financial aid program that allows eligible students to earn money through part-time employment while enrolled in college.

At Goldey-Beacom, work-study jobs may be available in offices and departments across the campus. The positions can help students pay educational and personal expenses while gaining workplace experience.

Eligibility for the program does not guarantee a job. Students must search for available positions, submit applications and be selected by the hiring department.

Students should contact the college’s Financial Aid Office to determine whether they qualify and then review available openings through Handshake, an online employment and career platform.

Student worker and intern positions

Students who do not qualify for Federal Work-Study may still be eligible for other campus employment.

Some departments use their own budgets to hire student workers. The college may also offer student intern positions that include greater responsibility, project-based assignments or work connected to a student’s academic program and career goals.

Those positions may involve supporting campus events, assisting administrative offices, contributing to department projects or helping provide student services.

In addition to earning money, campus employment can help students develop professional relationships with faculty and staff and build experience for future job searches.

Graduate assistant opportunities

Graduate students may be able to offset tuition costs by working as graduate assistants.

Goldey-Beacom graduate assistants generally receive tuition assistance instead of an hourly wage. Assignments may include administrative support, academic projects, research assistance, event planning, athletic programs or other department responsibilities.

Openings depend on departmental needs, funding and availability and may change from one semester to another.

Graduate students should review Handshake, monitor campus announcements and contact departments directly about potential opportunities.

Resident assistant positions

Students living on campus may also consider applying to become resident assistants.

Resident assistants help support students living in campus housing, provide information, build community and assist residents with questions and concerns.

At Goldey-Beacom, resident assistants typically receive housing coverage instead of an hourly wage.

The positions require leadership, patience and responsibility but can provide valuable experience while reducing one of the largest costs associated with attending college.

Students interested in the positions should contact Residence Life for application deadlines, job expectations and information about housing benefits.

Employer tuition assistance

Students who are already employed should ask whether their companies provide tuition assistance or reimbursement programs.

Some employers pay a portion of education expenses, particularly when a student’s degree or courses relate to the employee’s current position or future career development.

Policies vary by company. An employer may pay costs upfront or reimburse an employee after a course is completed. Companies may also require workers to maintain a particular grade, employment status or length of service.

Students should speak with their supervisors or human resources departments before registering for classes to learn about eligibility requirements, deadlines and required documentation.

Jobs and internships through Handshake

Handshake can also connect students with employment and internship opportunities both on and off campus.

Students may use the platform to find student worker, intern, work-study and graduate assistant positions at Goldey-Beacom. The service also lists part-time jobs, paid internships, career fairs, employer events and full-time positions with outside organizations.

Students can improve their results by completing their profiles, uploading updated resumes, identifying career interests and reviewing new listings regularly.

Students should consider whether they need steady income, experience in their academic field, remote work, flexible scheduling or a position near campus before applying.

The college said the opportunities may not eliminate every expense, but they can help students make their education more affordable while developing skills and experience that will benefit them after graduation.
