The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring heavy rainfall to south Bengal districts till July 28, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast on Monday (July 27, 2026).

It said the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal and along the West Bengal-Odisha coasts is very likely to move north-westward and cross the Bengal-Odisha coasts by Monday (July 27, 2026) afternoon.

The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast and the northwest Bay of Bengal till July 29, as sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough due to squally winds reaching speeds of 55 to 65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph at times.

The coastal and adjoining districts of Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram will receive very heavy rainfall, while South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur are set to get heavy downpours till Tuesday (July 28, 2026), the IMD said. Isolated heavy precipitation is likely over the State’s sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar till August 1, it said.

Sagar Island in the South 24 Parganas district received the maximum rainfall in the State at 52 mm in 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Monday (July 27, 2026), the IMD data said. Other places that received significant rainfall include Kanthi (34 mm), Haldia (29 mm) and Canning (21 mm), it said. The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky over Kolkata with one or two spells of moderate rain till Tuesday (July 28, 2026).
