A high-level government committee on economic reform has arrived in Nimule to assess operations at the country’s main border crossing and identify ways to improve revenue collection.

The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform, led by the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Gen. Pieng Deng Kuol, started the field mission on Sunday.

according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the committee is expected to engage border stakeholders, assess working conditions, identify challenges, and recommend measures to strengthen revenue collection and address malpractice at the border.

The delegation includes senior government officials, including Interior Minister Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu, Justice Minister Wek Mamer, Deputy Finance Minister Thok Turuk, and South Sudan Revenue Authority Commissioner General Amb. Moun Ajuet, as well as representatives from security agencies.

The visit is part of the implementation of the Presidential Order cancelling non-statutory tax exemptions, a reform initiative aimed at increasing government revenue and improving financial management.

Nimule is South Sudan’s main trade gateway with Uganda and other East African countries and a major source of customs revenue for the country.
