Imphal: Police have arrested a 56-year-old woman and seized Rs 28.78 lakh believed to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade, while also recovering a stolen Mahindra Bolero during separate follow-up operations linked to an ongoing narcotics investigation.
The accused, identified as Zenngaihniang (56) of New Lamka in Churachandpur district, was arrested on July 24 during an anti-drug operation launched based on specific intelligence inputs. The operation forms part of an investigation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act being conducted by Churachandpur Police.
During the raid, police recovered Rs 28,78,400 suspected to be drug proceeds. Officers also seized five cash registers and a cash-counting machine from the premises.
According to investigators, the woman allegedly transferred substantial amounts of money to international recipients believed to have links with drug trafficking networks operating out of Myanmar.
Following the operation, police registered a separate theft case at PGCI Police Station and subsequently traced and recovered a stolen Mahindra Bolero (AR-28-0126) from Churachandpur town.
The latest arrest comes amid an intensified anti-narcotics drive across the state. On July 22, security forces arrested Tinnei Thadou (52) in Churachandpur and seized 1.6 kg of suspected brown sugar during the operation.
Officials said Manipur continues to be a major transit route for narcotics smuggled from Myanmar due to its proximity to the Golden Triangle and its long, porous international border. They added that cross-border trafficking networks have increasingly used the state to transport and distribute illegal drugs, prompting sustained enforcement operations against those allegedly involved.
