The International Organization for Migration helped resettle 1,301 Afghan refugees from Tajikistan to third countries in 2025, according to the IOM Mission in Tajikistan’s annual report.

Canada was among the main destinations for those resettled.

Of the refugees, 627 were men and 674 were women.

IOM supported them throughout the resettlement process, including assistance with travel documents, coordination with consular offices, pre-departure orientation and support at airports.

The organization said the measures were intended to ensure that the refugees travelled safely, in an orderly manner and with their dignity respected.

Support for refugees remaining in Tajikistan

IOM also continued efforts to improve conditions for Afghan refugees who remained in Tajikistan.

With the organization’s support, inter-agency working groups on refugee integration were established in the city of Vahdat as well as in Roudaki, Kushoniyon and Jabbor-Rasoulov districts.

The groups operate under local authorities and include representatives of government agencies, local communities and organizations providing social and other essential services.

They assess refugees’ needs, review individual cases, coordinate assistance and help people gain timely access to healthcare, social support and other services.

According to the report, such a mechanism is particularly important because of the continuing risk of sudden arrivals of Afghan nationals deported from other countries.

More than 10,000 people joined community events

Throughout the year, IOM also organized activities intended to strengthen relations between Afghan refugees and local residents.

These included youth sporting events, community meetings, cultural programs and initiatives supporting women.

More than 80 events brought together over 10,000 refugees and members of host communities, according to the organization.

IOM said the activities were designed to reduce social tensions, build trust and create opportunities for dialogue and cooperation.
