The Special Court has ordered suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and his co-accused not to wear neck-ties during court proceedings, citing security concerns.

The directive was issued during Friday’s 100th session of the trial.

Presiding Judge James Alala said the accused are prohibited from wearing ties for security reasons and for their own safety.

“The accused are prohibited from wearing ties for security purposes and for their own safety. The court is responsible for security within the courtroom,” Judge Alala said.

The matter arose after prosecution lawyer Ajo Onyo Ohisa raised concerns over Dr. Machar’s continued appearance in court wearing a tie.

Ohisa argued that wearing a tie was against court procedures and urged the accused to comply with the court’s directives.

The prosecutor also rejected accusations by Dr. Machar that he had intimidated members of the defence team.

Ohisa said it was unfortunate for the fifth accused to make such claims, adding that he had not interacted with the defence lawyers on Friday.

He further reminded the court that the accused are not permitted to address the bench directly and must communicate through their defence lawyers.

The trial was adjourned until July 27.
