The European Commission has entered wines bearing the Hungarian designation ‘Mura / Murai’ into the European Union register of protected designations of origin (PDOs).
Wines produced in the Mura wine region, in southwestern Hungary near the Croatian and Slovenian borders, are known for their intense aromas and flavors, full-bodied character, and fresh, lively acidity, writes the EU’s executive body in Brussels.
The quality and reputation of these wines are closely linked to the region’s geographical characteristics and the local viticultural and winemaking traditions that have developed over a long period of time.
The protection covers white, red, and Siller wines. Siller is a traditional wine style that falls between dark rosé and light red wine.
The characteristic flavor profile of the wines is shaped by the region’s natural conditions, such as the mild, rainy climate and the influence of the Mura River.
The white wines are characterized by fresh acidity and fruity aromas, while the intense flavor profiles of the Siller and red wines are dominated by notes of red berries. With the inclusion of the ‘Mura / Murai’ designation, the number of protected geographical indications registered in the European Union’s eAmbrosia database now exceeds 3,900.
