Lest We Forget: Panamanian Families Received the Remains of Two Victims Just Identified from the 1989 Invasion

The Attorney General’s Office reported that it handed over the skeletal remains of Marcos Antonio Coulthrust Quiñones and Manuel Carol Ojo, identified through DNA testing as part of the investigations related to the military invasion of December 20, 1989.

The procedure was carried out by the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office’s Discharge Section at the Garden of Peace cemetery, with the participation of the victims’ families, who received the remains for burial.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the identification was made possible thanks to DNA tests processed at the Biomolecular Analysis Laboratory of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences and at the Forensic Genetics Laboratory of the Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala.

The organization explained that the remains were identified after comparing the genetic profiles obtained with reference samples provided by their relatives. It also indicated that the remains had been exhumed from unidentified burial sites.  The cases are part of the summaries investigating the events that occurred during the invasion of December 20, 1989, and the process of identifying the victims.
