MBABANE– Eswatini is taking significant steps to strengthen its regulatory framework to ensure that nuclear and radiation technologies are used safely, responsibly and in support of national development.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs convened relevant stakeholders on July 23, 2026, at Open House Hotel in Mbabane for a two-day validation exercise on the proposed Nuclear and Radiation Safety Regulations. The exercise brings together stakeholders and experts to review the proposed regulations and assess whether they provide an effective framework for regulating activities involving nuclear and radiation technologies in the country.
Radiation technologies are used in several important sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, industry, scientific research and environmental monitoring. In the health sector, radiation is used for diagnostic imaging and other medical procedures, while in agriculture and industry it can support research, production and quality control.
The validation exercise is an important step in ensuring that the proposed regulations are practical, comprehensive and responsive to the country’s needs. Stakeholders are expected to provide technical input and recommendations that will help strengthen the regulatory framework before its finalisation. The regulations are expected to establish clear safety requirements for institutions and operators involved in activities that use nuclear and radiation technologies. They will also clarify the responsibilities of relevant institutions and promote compliance with established safety standards.
Through improved regulation and oversight, the country aims to ensure that workers who operate or work around radiation sources are adequately protected. The framework will also help safeguard communities and the environment from the potential risks associated with the improper handling, use and management of radioactive materials and radiation sources. The exercise further provides an opportunity for stakeholders to strengthen coordination and promote a shared understanding of nuclear and radiation safety responsibilities.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs has emphasised the importance of ensuring that the benefits of nuclear and radiation technologies are harnessed responsibly. As these technologies continue to support various aspects of development, effective regulation remains essential in balancing innovation and development with public safety.
Through the validation of the proposed regulations, Eswatini is laying the foundation for a stronger and more coordinated nuclear and radiation safety system. The process is expected to contribute to the establishment of a regulatory framework that protects workers, communities and the environment while enabling the country to responsibly benefit from the use of nuclear and radiation technologies in support of national development.
