Chief Prosecutor Gábor Bálint Nagy submitted his resignation on Wednesday; the announcement was published on the prosecution service’s website.

In a statement also sent to MTI, Gábor Bálint Nagy wrote that safeguarding the independence and authority of the justice system, including the prosecution service, is one of the foundations of a democratic institutional framework. He added that the prosecution service must not become a tool in the struggles of political actors, nor can it serve as an arena for day-to-day political interests or power games.

“In order to make this unequivocally clear, I have today — through the interim President of the Republic — submitted my resignation by way of a declaration addressed to the Vice President acting in the capacity of Speaker of the National Assembly, requesting that my mandate be terminated on 25 August 2026,” Gábor Bálint Nagy announced.

In the statement, he stressed that in recent times the organisation he leads had been subjected — through his person — to a series of attacks that “far exceed the bounds of acceptable professional and public debate,” despite the fact that he had carried out his mandate in accordance with the law and with regard exclusively to professional considerations.

He stated: “Throughout my career, neither I nor my family members have had any involvement with political parties, and I have held the position of Chief Prosecutor for just over a year.”

He noted that, alongside statements by political figures — which in many cases contain falsehoods — it is becoming increasingly common for participants in criminal proceedings, including lawyers acting as legal representatives, to use their own cases to launch politically motivated attacks against certain actors in the justice system, including the prosecution service.

“These unworthy statements now affect not only me and my office, but also endanger the reputation of the prosecution service, undermine its independence, and damage public trust in the work of the more than four thousand professionals employed there,” he said.

According to Gábor Bálint Nagy, it sends an extremely bad message when public figures call for the removal of the incumbent Prosecutor General simply because ongoing criminal proceedings are not unfolding as they had envisioned. This has the consequence that any sitting Prosecutor General must fear that if their work fails to meet the expectations of politicians, they must reckon with being removed from office, he warned.

The sole reason for his resignation from the position of Prosecutor General is his regard for the interests of the prosecutorial organisation: the functioning and independence of the prosecution service must not be harmed under any circumstances by the ignoble, politically motivated struggles that have developed around the Prosecutor General, he stressed. For this reason, he does not wish to remain a party to the conflict surrounding him — a conflict built on false foundations and serving political ends — becoming a further instrument in the erosion of institutional trust, the statement reads.

With the Prosecutor General’s resignation, “the country has been freed of yet another Orbán puppet” — this was how the Prime Minister responded to Gábor Bálint Nagy’s announcement.

In a Facebook post published in the early afternoon on Wednesday, Péter Magyar wrote that the Prosecutor General had just resigned, and that with this, the country had been freed of yet another Orbán puppet who had been obstructing the change of regime.
