Egg farmers say they’re losing millions due to sweltering heat

Egg farmers across the country are losing millions of dollars due to sweltering heat conditions impacting their operations.

This is according to president of the Jamaica Egg Farmers Association, Mark Campbell, who spoke with our news centre on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, the Met Service disclosed that a super El Niño phenomenon would emerge, resulting in reduced rainfall during the summer period.

El Niño refers to a warming of the ocean surface, leading to higher temperatures across parts of the Caribbean.

Campbell says the conditions have particularly impacted production on the south coast.

Meanwhile, Campbell is urging farmers to take steps to prevent loss.

And Agriculture Minister Floyd Green is also cautioning farmers to take steps to protect themselves, and their livestock and produce amid the increasing temperatures.

Green says the ministry has started a 1-hundred and 40 million dollar drought mitigation programme that will provide trucked water to livestock, outdoors and field farmers.

The programme is also set to facilitate the distribution of water tanks to farmers.

The Minister was speaking at a recent Heifer Redistribution programme launch in St. Thomas.
