International observers will monitor the upcoming elections of deputies to the Kurultai in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports.
The media outlet reported that the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan has accredited around 90 observers. They include representatives from Pakistan, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Sweden, Iran, and other countries.
Two observers from Kyrgyzstan have also been accredited.
The largest number of observers has been accredited from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) mission and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS.
On July 1, Kazakhstan’s new Constitution came into force. As a result, the Majilis and Senate ceased operations, and the mandates of their deputies ended. Under the new Constitution, the country’s bicameral parliament will be replaced by a unicameral legislative body — the Kurultai.
Elections for deputies of the new legislative body are scheduled for August 23. Seven political parties have been admitted to participate in the elections.
