Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Massad Boulos, senior adviser to the US president on Arab and African affairs, discussed the conflicts in Sudan and Libya, developments in the Horn of Africa, and Egypt’s concerns over Nile water security during talks on Sunday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said.

The two officials reaffirmed the importance of continued coordination on regional issues and strengthening the strategic partnership between Cairo and Washington, according to a ministry statement.

On Sudan, Abdelatty called for a sustainable ceasefire, an enhanced humanitarian response and a comprehensive political process that is led and owned by the Sudanese parties, while preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty and national institutions.

He noted that the conflict has triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, displacing millions of people, while repeated international efforts to broker a settlement between the warring parties have yet to produce a breakthrough.

Turning to Libya, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for the country’s unity and the preservation of its national institutions, calling for a Libyan-led political process that would pave the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

The minister also affirmed Egypt’s support for United Nations, regional and international efforts, including those led by the United States, to achieve a lasting political settlement in Libya.

The talks also addressed developments in the Horn of Africa, which Abdelatty described as a direct extension of Egypt’s national security.

He stressed the importance of supporting state institutions, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region, and rejecting any actions that could undermine regional stability.

On Nile water security, Abdelatty described the issue as “existential” for Egypt and reiterated Cairo’s rejection of unilateral measures in the Eastern Nile Basin.

He called for adherence to international law governing the use of shared and transboundary water resources in a manner that safeguards the interests of all Nile Basin countries.

For his part, Boulos praised Egypt’s role in promoting regional security and stability, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with Cairo on regional issues of mutual concern.
