Torres fires Spain to World Cup triumph

NEW YORK: Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after Ferran Torres scored the decisive extra-time goal to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final on Sunday.

Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, finishing clinically to hand Spain the world title after more than 100 minutes of tense, evenly contested football.

Argentina’s task became significantly harder after midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a straight red card in first-half stoppage time, forcing the defending champions to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Argentina defended resolutely and created chances to keep the contest alive before Torres finally found the breakthrough in extra time.

Spain controlled possession for long periods and continued to press until the decisive moment, with Torres’ goal proving enough to separate the two sides in one of the most closely fought World Cup finals in recent history.
