UNDP Stresses Importance of Justice and Rule of Law in Libya

Tripoli – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has emphasized the crucial role that justice and the rule of law play in reducing conflicts, rebuilding trust, and laying the foundations for sustainable peace in Libya.

In a statement marking the World Day for International Criminal Justice on July 17, the UNDP said strengthening the rule of law is a key pillar in its efforts to support Libya’s stability and resilience. Through its project on “Enhancing the Rule of Law and Justice in Libya,” the program partners with national authorities, including the Office of the Public Prosecutor, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, and civil society, to help build effective, inclusive, and responsive institutions.

The UNDP noted that its work focuses primarily on meeting the needs of individuals. Restoring public trust and ensuring equal access to justice are priorities. The agency promotes the participation of families of missing persons in transitional justice efforts, develops juvenile justice systems to safeguard and rehabilitate youth, and expands community security and legal aid services to protect the most vulnerable groups in line with international standards.

The statement stressed that justice goes beyond combating impunity. It involves building strong local foundations, addressing root causes of conflict, and empowering people to rebuild their lives with security and dignity. The UNDP affirmed that strengthening justice today ensures greater resilience and capacity to overcome challenges in the future.
