Santo Domingo.- The Association Against Gambling Addiction has raised concerns over alleged legislative initiatives that it says could significantly expand gambling operations in the Dominican Republic.

The organization claims one proposal would amend Law 140-02 by eliminating the requirement that sports betting shops be located at least 500 meters apart, a change it argues would lead to a sharp increase in betting establishments and greater public exposure to gambling.

The association also expressed concern over the possible expansion of horse racing agencies, alleging they could be used to offer gambling activities beyond horse race betting, despite current legal restrictions. It further claimed that agreements could enable up to 25,000 new betting locations nationwide, although it did not provide supporting documents or identify the parties allegedly involved.

In addition, the group called for stricter regulation of online gambling platforms, including greater oversight and taxation for both domestic and international operators. It urged lawmakers to ensure any changes to gambling legislation are debated publicly and consider the potential social, economic, and public health impacts.

As of publication, the National Congress and the authorities responsible for regulating the gambling sector have not publicly responded to the allegations, and no specific bill matching the organization’s claims has been officially identified.
