Georgie Wood always wanted to work with food, but not as a chef. Instead, she found her passion as a food scientist hoping to innovate a market.
“I’m very passionate about really high-quality chilled food,” she said.
Wood is pursuing her passion in Concord with the opening of Georgie’s Kitchen, a prepared meal delivery service. She’s now in the hiring stage, and hopes to start delivering food in the coming months.
Wood, who’s originally from England, noticed a lack of the meal delivery services that were commonplace in her home country, and decided to seize the opportunity.
She started in New York City, where she and a business partner opened Georgie and Tom’s, a meal delivery service similar to what she’s doing now. However, the two found distribution by mail to be a major roadblock: Packaging was expensive and delivery could be unpredictable.
After Georgie and Tom’s closed, Wood partnered with John Lert, founder and CEO of Alert Venture Foundry, a Massachusetts-based startup studio with a mission of creating “new technologies that improve people’s lives” and sponsoring companies that can work with those technologies.
Georgie’s Kitchen plans to use “chilled dispensers” where customers can pick up the meals they ordered in daily deliveries by the business, allowing Wood to skip altogether the need to mail meals.
She also places a high priority on quality and consistency, making sure every meal is tested before it leaves her facility.
Wood plans to put the dispensers in large condo units in Boston for ease of residents’ use, hoping they will be her main customer demographic.
