BARBADOS : Sir Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indies cricketer widely regarded as the greatest allrounder the sport has ever produced, has died at his home in Barbados at the age of 89.
Cricket West Indies confirmed his death on Friday, paying tribute to one of the game’s most iconic figures.
“A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers,” Cricket West Indies said in a post on X.
Sobers enjoyed a remarkable international career spanning two decades, representing the West Indies in 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974. He scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and claimed 235 wickets, excelling as a left-arm pace bowler, orthodox spinner and wrist spinner while also earning a reputation as one of cricket’s finest fielders.
Born in Barbados, Sobers made his first-class debut at the age of 16 and earned his Test cap a year later against England in Jamaica. Initially selected primarily for his bowling, he soon emerged as one of the most complete cricketers the game had seen.
His defining moment came in 1958 when, aged 21, he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan at Sabina Park in Jamaica, breaking Len Hutton’s world record for the highest individual Test score. The record stood for 36 years before fellow West Indian Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994.
Sobers’ influence extended far beyond statistics. His ability to dominate matches with bat, ball and in the field made him a global sporting icon and a symbol of West Indies cricket’s golden era.
The International Cricket Council’s highest individual men’s honour, the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, is named after him and is presented annually to the outstanding performer in international cricket across all formats.
Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world as players, administrators and fans remembered a man whose extraordinary versatility and talent helped redefine the possibilities of the game.
