Ajloun Cable Car Transforms Tourism Three Years After Launch…

Three years after welcoming its first visitors, the Ajloun Cable Car has become one of Jordan’s leading tourist attractions, contributing to a significant increase in visitor numbers and helping reshape the northern governorate into a major destination for eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and family recreation, according to Sakher Al-Ajlouni, Chairman of the Board of the Jordan Free and Development Zones Group (JFDZG).اضافة اعلان

In a statement, Al-Ajlouni said the cable car was conceived as more than a tourism project, describing it as a comprehensive development initiative aligned with Jordan’s broader vision of achieving sustainable development across the Kingdom’s governorates while capitalizing on each region’s unique competitive advantages.

Since opening in 2023, the cable car has drawn thousands of visitors seeking panoramic views of Ajloun’s forests and mountains while providing easier access to some of the governorate’s best-known historical and religious landmarks.

Al-Ajlouni said the project has helped establish Ajloun as one of Jordan’s leading destinations for environmental, recreational, and religious tourism.

He added that the attraction has played an important role in supporting the local economy. Hotels, eco-lodges, and tourist cabins have reported higher occupancy rates, while restaurants, shops, and other tourism-related businesses have benefited from increased visitor spending.

The project has also encouraged longer stays, generating wider economic benefits for the local community.

According to Al-Ajlouni, local community participation has been a key component of the project from the outset. A permanent marketplace established at the site allows artisans, home-based producers, and small businesses to market handicrafts and locally made products that reflect Ajloun’s cultural heritage under the slogan “Made by Ajloun Hands.”

The cable car has also become a venue for national and seasonal events, including the Ajloun Spring Festival, the Olive Festival, and a range of cultural and artistic activities that have helped sustain tourism throughout the year.

Al-Ajlouni said the project’s vision extends beyond the cable car itself, with plans to continue developing an integrated tourism destination through new investments, recreational facilities, and visitor services designed to encourage longer stays and further increase economic returns for the local community.

He also noted that the cable car strengthens links between Ajloun’s major attractions, including Ajloun Castle and the Mar Elias pilgrimage site, offering visitors an experience that combines nature, history, archaeology, and religious tourism.

Addressing safety, Al-Ajlouni said the system was equipped with advanced international technologies and designed with multiple emergency response procedures.

These include safely returning cabins to the departure station, directing them to the maintenance station when necessary, or carrying out controlled ground evacuations at pre-designated locations. Specialized rescue and evacuation teams have also received extensive training in line with international best practices, he said.

The Ajloun Cable Car officially opened in 2023 and has since become one of Jordan’s flagship tourism projects, attracting both domestic and international visitors while contributing to the governorate’s growing tourism sector.
