The head of the Republican National Committee wrote off Democrats’ recent primary wins as a “gift” for his party on Wednesday, dismissing the pack of progressives and democratic socialists as “mini-Mamdanis” during the Hill Nation Summit in Washington D.C.

Asked if he was worried about left-wing candidates energizing Democratic voters in this year’s midterms, RNC Chair Joe Gruters smiled, shifted in his seat and said, “No, keep on electing them because they’re giving us a gift every single day.”

“What’s happened to the left –– they’re in a death spiral,” the longtime ally of President Donald Trump went on. “All of you get to see it.”

Gruters took a dig at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who handily beat establishment Democrat Andrew Cuomo in a primary last June and went on to defeat Republican Curtis Sliwa and Cuomo, who ran in the general election as an Independent, in November.

“All these mini-Mamdanis running around and they’re winning, and it’s not New York City and big cities, we’re talking about middle America,” he said.

Despite progressive successes spanning from reliably blue New York to political see-saw Colorado and perennial battleground state Pennsylvania, Gruters argued the candidates’ policies would be what sinks them in the end.

Stumbling for several moments, he then compared the GOP’s candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, former Rep. Mike Rogers, to “fanatic” Abdul El-Sayed, who is polling a breath ahead of Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary race.

Gruters then sailed into a tangent about disgraced Maine Democrat Graham Platner, who ended his campaign to unseat incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) earlier this month following rape allegations from an ex-girlfriend.

After confidently predicting Republicans will gain ground in both the House and Senate, he told people they didn’t have to take his word for it and pointed them to the non-partisan Cook Political Report, which lists both Michigan and Maine’s Senate races as a toss-up.

“We’re gonna defy history because the president’s given us an incredible opportunity,” Gruters then said of Trump, whose net approval rating clocked in at -23 in polling published by The Economist on Tuesday.

Support for progressive Democrats and democratic socialists has inspired a wave of GOP officials to denounce left-wing candidates as traitors, radicals and dangerous communists. But Republicans’ tepid Red Scare tactics might not be as potent as they think.

An Economist/YouGov poll released earlier this month revealed 29% of surveyed voters said they would be willing to back a democratic socialist, though 45% said they would not.
