Vanuatu’s Chess Federation has confirmed its final men’s and women’s teams for the Chess Olympiad in September, despite ongoing disputes within the federation over board decisions and team selection.

The confirmation comes after changes to the federation’s leadership, including the removal of former Secretary Jeremy Ellison, and the replacement of players in the men’s team.

Speaking to VBTC Sports, Mr. Ellison questioned the process that led to his removal from both the board and the national team.

“Removing me from the board has also led to the country’s top player declining his place at the Olympiad. The national champion has also resigned from the committee because he disagrees with how things are being handled. I believe what has happened is not fully legal, and I remain open to discussions with the current board.”

Following Mr. Ellison’s removal, Rick Hinton was appointed as the federation’s new Secretary. Another player, Sean, also withdrew from the Olympiad squad and was replaced by Igor Nasse, while Alpha Solon was appointed Vice President.

Federation President Lesly Nompavos defended the board’s decision, saying it was made in the best interests of the federation.

“We removed our Secretary from the board and also as a player. At some point he wanted to work independently instead of through the board, and that created problems. Some important matters were handled without informing the board, which is not how a federation should operate.”

Mr. Nompavos said the federation will hold its Annual General Meeting after the September Olympiad, where members will have the opportunity to discuss the issues facing the organisation.

He also confirmed that Vanuatu’s final men’s and women’s teams for the Olympiad are made up entirely of Ni-Vanuatu players.
