SPLIT, 13 July 2026 – Construction of the Kozjak Tunnel has reached a significant milestone with the successful breakthrough of the tunnel, marking major progress on the “New Gateway to Split” infrastructure project.
The “New Gateway to Split” project is one of the largest transport infrastructure investments currently underway in Dalmatia.
It will provide a direct road connection between the A1 motorway at the Vučevica interchange, the Kozjak Tunnel, the junction with the DC8 state road and the Port of Split.
The project is being delivered in three phases and is designed to improve traffic flow, create a direct connection between the A1 motorway and Split, and reduce congestion across the city’s existing road network.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Šuta described the tunnel breakthrough as the most important milestone of the project’s first phase, saying it represents a major step towards transforming transport links in Split with the support of the Croatian Government.

He also noted that the city is moving closer to creating a new entrance to Split and revitalising its northern districts, alongside plans for the proposed St Duje Bridge, whose preliminary design was recently presented.
Work is also underway on a spatial and transport study that will define the project’s third phase. This stage will establish the final road connection between the A1 motorway and the Port of Split, completing what officials describe as one of the most significant infrastructure projects for the future development of Split and the wider urban area.

The completed project is expected to provide faster access to the city, improve connections with the ferry port and ease traffic pressure on existing routes.

The ceremony was attended by Split Mayor Tomislav Šuta, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban, Croatian Roads chairman Ivica Budimir, along with representatives of national, regional and local authorities.
