‘Never stop telling them to wear their seat belt’, teen driver uninjured after totaling truck

Milford, Neb. (KLKN) – Pieces of a rear-view mirror and taillight were left behind in the middle of a ditch after a crash totaled a pickup truck on Thursday.

The teenage driver was astonishingly uninjured, and his mother says that he’s lucky to be alive.

The incident happened in Seward County, when the young man was on his way to lift weights.

He dozed off for a moment, before swerving off the road and going airborne.

The vehicle landing 68 feet away from the initial point of impact.

Although the boy’s mother did not want to go on camera (to protect the privacy of her family), she spoke with Channel 8 about her profound gratitude.

She says the fact that he walked away with no injuries is a miracle.

Later, posting to Facebook, she thanked all who came to her son’s rescue and for the seat belt that stopped a tragedy.

“Sometimes you feel like kids aren’t listening and nothing is working. They’re just kids, but they are listening, and you should never stop telling them to wear their seatbelt,” she said.

The mother is also a woman of faith.

She believes an angel was looking over him too: her son’s dad, who passed away not too long ago.

Her Facebook post also gave kudos to Sergeant Troy Schaefer of the Seward County Sheriff’s Office.

Schaffer was first on scene, bringing decades of experience with situations like this.

“He was visibly shook. You know, young adults, they’re visibly shook,” he said.

“You just got to calm them down. First thing he wanted to do was call his parent.”

Sgt. Schaefer says other crashes like this one don’t end in the same way.

He says he’s seen many people die from this type of accident and this teen is an exception.

“He took a pretty big jump. I mean, 68 feet over the ground. He’s going to be sore,” said Schaefer.

The driver was later examined at a local hospital as a precautionary measure and remained uninjured.

His mom says, God was there with him during the crash and she’s thankful that he was saved.
