The monsoon has intensified in Uttarakhand. Most parts of the state experienced torrential rain on Wednesday. Daily life was disrupted across the region, from the hills to the plains, due to the heavy downpour.
Heavy Rain in Haridwar Over 24 Hours
Significant rainfall was recorded in Haridwar district over the past 24 hours. According to the district administration, rainfall figures were: 122 mm in Haridwar, 160 mm in Roorkee, 45 mm in Bhagwanpur, a maximum of 180 mm in Laksar, and 115 mm in Roshanabad. The Meteorological Department recorded a minimum temperature of 21°C and a maximum of 26°C on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Ganga at Bhimgoda Barrage was recorded at 291.10 meters at 8:00 AM; this remains below the warning level of 293.00 meters and the danger level of 294.00 meters. Water flow was recorded at 47,778 cusecs upstream and 35,912 cusecs downstream of the barrage. The district administration has urged residents living along the riverbanks and pilgrims to remain vigilant and follow official weather advisories.
Roorkee has been experiencing continuous rain since Wednesday night, leading to waterlogging in several areas.
Road Closures in Tehri
Continuous rain has been falling in the district headquarters and surrounding areas since last night. Due to the rain, the NH-07 Rishikesh-Kirtinagar road (near Teen Dhara), SH-30 Suvakholi-Almas-Nagun road and SH-77 Narendra Nagar-Ranipokhari road are closed. Additionally, six rural roads are blocked.
Drop in Temperature by Approximately Four Degrees Celsius
Persistent rainfall has increased difficulties for residents in the Kumaon division, while Dehradun also saw a drop of about four degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature following several spells of heavy rain. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and rising river water levels have heightened public concern. An ‘Orange Alert’ for heavy rainfall has been issued for five districts of the state today as well.
Heavy Rain Alert for These Districts
According to the Meteorological Centre, the spell of rain is expected to continue across the state on Thursday, July 09. The department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, and Champawat, warning of very heavy rainfall in some areas. These districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and spells of extremely intense rainfall.
