Lithuania’s parliament is considering granting municipal public order officers the authority to stop and fine riders of electric scooters and electric bicycles in a bid to improve road safety and reduce the number of undetected traffic violations.

Under the proposed amendments, municipal officers would be empowered to enforce traffic rules for micromobility vehicles, a responsibility currently handled by police.

Supporters of the proposal say expanding enforcement powers would allow police to focus on more serious offenses while improving compliance with traffic regulations.

“It is not only a matter of road safety but also of the efficient allocation of state resources. Police officers should be deployed where their expertise and powers are needed most,” Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas said.

Police say the growing number of micromobility vehicles has made enforcement increasingly difficult because of limited resources.
