Venezuela earthquakes death toll nears 3,000

The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela last month has risen to 2,954, according to the country’s Communication and Information Ministry, with thousands more injured as rescue and recovery operations continue.

The ministry reported that 16,592 people have been injured, while 6,462 survivors have been rescued from affected areas. The disaster also caused widespread destruction, damaging 856 buildings and leading to the collapse of 190 structures.

A total of 3,281 international rescue workers have been deployed to support emergency operations, alongside 29,567 local personnel engaged in relief and recovery efforts. Authorities said teams remain active in the hardest-hit regions to ensure public safety and assist ongoing reconstruction work.

The earthquakes, which struck on June 24, included two major tremors measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude that hit northern Venezuela within 39 seconds of each other, according to the US Geological Survey. Since then, the region has recorded 942 aftershocks as emergency services continue monitoring seismic activity and supporting affected communities.
