CORA, Wyo. (KIFI) — Firefighters made significant progress Tuesday on the Kinky Creek Fire near Jackson as cooler temperatures and recent precipitation allowed crews to resume suppression efforts after several days of weather-related challenges.
Fire managers say firefighters were able to re-engage operations across multiple areas of the fire, with aviation resources playing a key role in supporting crews on the ground. Two water-scooping aircraft and helicopters conducted water drops throughout the day to help cool active areas and strengthen containment lines.
Crews continue to make progress along the southern edge of the fire, while firefighters are working on the western heel and northeast corner. Additional efforts are focused on connecting containment lines along the northern edge of the fire.
The lightning-caused fire is estimated at 880 acres and is 12% contained. Approximately 135 personnel are assigned to the incident.
Fire officials say recent precipitation and cooler temperatures have moderated fire behavior, creating more favorable conditions for firefighting operations. However, crews continue to face hazards from fire-weakened trees and steep, rugged terrain.
Aircraft assigned to the fire are expected to conduct water-scooping operations on Jackson Lake on Wednesday. Boaters, anglers and other recreationists are being asked to stay alert for low-flying aircraft and keep a safe distance while scoopers collect water.

Officials are also asking the public to avoid Kinky Creek Road, the Kinky Creek and Clear Creek trails, and the Brewster, Lunch and Chateau Lake areas while firefighting operations continue. A closure order remains in effect for portions of the fire area.
Teton County Emergency Management says Darwin Ranch and nearby private lands remain in “SET” status, meaning residents and visitors should review evacuation plans, gather essential items and be prepared should conditions change.
The Kinky Creek Fire is burning west of Darwin Ranch near Upper Gros Ventre Falls in the Gros Ventre Wilderness on the Jackson Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The fire is burning in heavy timber across steep, rugged terrain.
