The Minister of Interior, Aleu Ayieny Aleu, says he has told the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) about South Sudan’s plans and the seriousness of the country to hold its first post-independence elections and transition to democratic governance.
Minister Aleu made the remarks after meeting the IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, Ambassador Moussa Djama Ali on Monday in Juba. The meeting focused on the progress of the peace process and challenges affecting the implementation of the transitional roadmap.
He said the government is determined to move the country from the transitional period to a legitimately elected government through peaceful and credible elections.
“I’ve told them exactly what are our plans and the seriousness of the nation to have elections. That the country is determined to move away from transition to legitimacy in terms of elections and to achieve democratic ways of governance. We have discussed several things and I appreciate what the ambassador said of their support for the processes we are doing,” Minister Aleu said.
For his part, the IGAD Special Envoy, Ambassador Moussa Djama Ali, reaffirmed the regional bloc’s commitment to supporting South Sudan as it prepares for the elections.
“Once again, I would like to thank the IGAD organization for supporting the Republic of South Sudan in this transitional period. I wish them all the best in the upcoming elections in security and stability. Once again, I would like to emphasize that the IGAD organization will do its best to help South Sudan. As you know, South Sudan is a member of the IGAD organization. Therefore, we will be at this stage.”
The meeting comes as South Sudan and its regional partners continue consultations on implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement and preparations for the country’s first elections since gaining independence.
