The European Union, through its Support to the West African Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) Project, has donated two brand-new Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) and forensic kits to the Naval Service of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), in a move aimed at strengthening maritime safety and security operations.
The equipment was officially handed over during a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the Sierra Leone Navy. The event brought together senior defence officials and partners involved in maritime security cooperation.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Yayah Brima, Director of Defence Public Relations and Information, the donation was received on behalf of the Ministry of Defence by Deputy Minister of Defence, Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi (Rtd.).
He stated that the newly provided assets are expected to significantly enhance Sierra Leone’s maritime surveillance capabilities, improve operational response at sea, and support ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities within the country’s territorial waters.
The initiative underscores the continued partnership between the European Union and Sierra Leone in advancing regional maritime security, protecting coastal resources, and promoting stability across West African waters.
Officials noted that the support forms part of a broader international collaboration aimed at strengthening the operational readiness of Sierra Leone’s naval forces to address emerging maritime threats.
