Heat and Humidity Increasing This Weekend

While we had a mild official first week of summer, hot and humid conditions catch up to us this weekend. Heat index values soar to the triple digits by Sunday, with temperatures in the 90s through the start of July.

A small corridor of counties in the panhandle this evening could see a few scattered severe storms. A Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) of severe weather is in place with large hail and damaging winds the main concerns for the strongest storms.

Storm chances will shift east as a warm front lifts from the south throughout the day on Saturday. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) of severe weather is in place, with isolated severe storms possible, mainly north of Interstate 80.

Here is a look at storm timing through the start of the weekend, according to the latest run of StormCast.

Lows on Friday night into Saturday morning look to be near average in the upper 50s to lower 60s across the state.

Cloud cover is expected to increase in Lincoln overnight, helping keep temperatures from falling below the mid-60s.

Highs will be a touch below average across the state, reaching the lower 80s. We start to see the warm, summer air start to creep in, with highs for the panhandle in the 90s.

Mostly cloudy skies at first in the Capital City, before gradual clearing is expected throughout the afternoon.

Once we hit Sunday, the heat and humidity look to stick around with heat index values also in the triple digits. It is best to start preparing for the heat now. Drink plenty of water and have a plan to take breaks from the heat.

On top of a hot end to June, chances for nightly showers and storms arrive in the forecast on Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, we stay on the warmer side for the start of July. The upper air pattern will look to keep us in the 90s for a while.
