The decision was made during a regular Cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The funding will support the preparation and participation of the national teams in regional and international competitions.
South Sudan’s basketball team is scheduled to compete in Window Three of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers in Douala, Cameroon, from July 2 to July 5, 2026.
The team, which is in Group A with Cameroon, Cape Verde, and Libya, will begin the final qualifying window with a match against Libya on July 2, followed by games against the other group members.
All participating teams have completed three matches in the opening round. The next set of games will be held in Dakar, Senegal, Douala, Cameroon, and Luanda, Angola.
The government said the funding is intended to support team preparation and participation.
The Cabinet also approved fiscal measures aimed at increasing domestic revenue and reducing reliance on oil income.
According to the government, the measures are planned to improve public financial management and increase revenue from non-oil sources.
The Council directed relevant institutions to carry out the approved measures.
The government said the support for sports and revenue reforms forms part of its approach to national development and public service delivery.
