North Myrtle Beach opens new Cypress Nook Disc Golf Course | Entertainment

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Jaybo Williams looked at the crowd, held up a disc, gave some instructions, turned around and let it fly.

And, with that, the new Cypress Nook Disc Golf Course was officially open.

“I’ve been around here, knew it was here, knew it could be possible,” Williams said. “They finally let us have it.”

A crowd of about 100 showed up for the formal opening of the new course, which is across the parking lot from the soccer fields at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, 150 Citizens Cir, Little River. Access to hole No. 1 is available at the section of the soccer parking lot near the Segway Building.

North Myrtle Beach Mayor J. Baldwin and City Council members Fred Coyne and Melissa Wober were among those present.

“It’s a growing sport,” Baldwin said in remarks to the crowd. “It’s growing all over the country. It’s something our residents, our visitors can come out here and relax and walk through these great trails. And, it’s for free.”

Disc golf involves throwing a disc into a basket, which serves as the hole at each step of the course. Many of those waiting to play had backpacks full of discs. Others had discs loaded in walking devices made especially for the burgeoning sport. The discs are all the same diameter but have varying textures.

Think of clubs in a golf bag.

“If you know you need lean out and do a certain kind of shot, you’ve got to have the right kind of disc to do that,” Williams said. “That way it does what you want it to do. You’ve got fairway drives, mid-range and putters. You’ve got to be able to get it in the basket.”

North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Director Matt Gibbons had been trying to find the right place for a disc golf course but it wasn’t easy.

“Last fall, a gentleman reached out and just said, ‘hey, how can I get involved?’ ” Gibbons said.

That led to a series of phone calls between Williams and Gibbons carrying over into 2026. Gibbons finally had a spot but he didn’t think it was big enough. Williams was welcome to go look at it.
