Fever Coach Stephanie White calls officiating against Caitlin Clark ‘egregious & utterly disrespectful’ – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fever star Caitlin Clark left Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury in the third quarter with a back injury and did not return. She exited at the 5:15 mark of the period after scoring 19 points.

Indiana went on to lose, 111-109, dropping to 10-8 on the season.

Clark has been listed on the injury report with a back issue for much of the year, and head coach Stephanie White said postgame that she was furious with how Clark was officiated throughout the night. White was especially upset about a second‑quarter foul by Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas that she believed crossed the line.

“It was egregious, the fact that it was a no-call,” White said. “I heard about it at halftime. I brought it to the attention of the officials at halftime. Number one, you’ve got to call it. It’s absolutely egregious and utterly disrespectful.”

White said she wasn’t sure whether that play contributed to Clark’s injury but made clear she felt the physicality went too far.

“We have a generational talent and a WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots right there that weren’t called,” White said. “And I just say again, absolutely unacceptable.”

White also questioned whether the league needs to take a closer look at how Clark is being defended and how she’s being officiated.

“We spent all offseason looking at officiating,” White said. “All offseason. And I still say the one thing we keep asking for is consistency. She is not called the same way everyone else is called.”

White added that the plays in question were “so egregious,” citing a “fist in the throat” and a dangerous landing space violation.

“It’s crazy. It’s dangerous,” she said. “I don’t know because to me, that’s like a do-over on a test. How do you screw up again?”

Clark’s status moving forward remains unclear.
