EV drivers and ‘fair share’ | LETTER | Letters

I have to disagree with Darmon Thornton’s June 18 letter about EVs and road funding. Mr. Thornton argues that he shouldn’t be assessed any tax for driving an electric vehicle even though he is not paying the gasoline tax. His argument is that he already “contributes heavily” through the value-based governmental services tax. He states he pays this tax on a newer EV and compares that to what an owner of an older gas-powered vehicle pays. What?

Mr. Thornton compares apples to oranges. His “newer EV” should be compared to a “newer gas-powered vehicle”when he’s referring to this services tax. And he still hasn’t addressed that the gas-powered vehicle owner pays gasoline taxes in addition to the value-based governmental services tax. He is not paying his fair share.
