Ministry of Justice and Courts Administration, 24 June 2026. Today marks the final sitting of Afioga Vui Clarence Nelson as Senior Supreme Court Judge of the Supreme Court of Samoa, bringing to a close an outstanding judicial career spanning 26 years of dedicated service to the Judiciary of Samoa.

His Honour was first appointed to the Bench as a District Court Judge in 2000 and was elevated to the Supreme Court in December 2006.
In November 2021, he was appointed Senior Supreme Court Judge, a position he held until his retirement in June 2026. Throughout his distinguished career, he served the people of Samoa with integrity, wisdom, fairness and humility.
Afioga Vui Clarence Nelson also made history in 2014 when he became the first Pacific Islander to be appointed to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, bringing honour not only to Samoa but to the entire Pacific region.
His final sitting today was attended by his beloved wife, children and family members, together with the Attorney General and members of her Office, members of the Samoa Law Society, the Acting Commissioner and members of his staff, as well as the Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the Courts, Papalii John Taimalelagi Afele, his Executive team and staff of the Ministry of Justice and Courts Administration.
It was an emotional and memorable occasion, with many saddened to witness the end of such a remarkable chapter in the history of Samoa’s Judiciary.
Afioga Vui Clarence Nelson is truly one of the finest and most distinguished judges ever to serve in the Judiciary of Samoa.
His wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
It is with great sadness that we see him leave the Bench and the Judiciary of Samoa.
