Grapevine and Kane Springs fires continue to burn south of Caliente in Nevada | Local Nevada

The Grapevine and Kane Springs fires continue to burn south of Caliente in Lincoln County, the Bureau of Land Management said Wednesday in a release.

The Grapevine Fire is estimated at 18,500 acres and remains at zero percent containment. At 6 a.m., command of the incident transitioned to Nevada Type 3 Incident Management Team 4, which will oversee ongoing suppression operations and support resources assigned to the fire, the agency said.

Firefighters made significant progress Tuesday, including a successful burnout operation in the northwestern portion of the fire that strengthened existing control features and improved firefighters’ ability to hold the western flank.

The Kane Springs Fire is now estimated at 17,036 acres and remains 40 percent contained. Firefighters continue making progress along the western and northern portions of the fire, where crews are engaging remaining pockets of heat as the fire moves into more favorable terrain and lighter fuels.

Caliente is about 140 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Overnight conditions remained favorable, the agency said, allowing firefighters to strengthen containment lines and improve fireline.

Recent precipitation across the incident has moderated fire behavior and increased opportunities for crews to secure additional portions of the perimeter.

Weather outlook

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast across the fire area. While rainfall is providing beneficial moisture to fuels and improving relative humidity, thunderstorms may produce gusty and erratic outflow winds capable of causing sudden changes in fire behavior. Aviation operations may experience temporary delays due to weather conditions.

Closures

Residents and visitors are reminded to avoid active fire areas and remain alert for firefighting personnel and equipment operating on area roads. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and the public is encouraged to stay informed, review their emergency plans, and follow all posted closures and restrictions.
