Dry, hot weather continues in New Mexico with heat alerts for eastern areas

Hot and dry weather will grip New Mexico through Monday, with heat advisories in effect Sunday for Chaves and Eddy counties.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Hot and dry weather will grip New Mexico through Monday, with heat advisories in effect Sunday for Chaves and Eddy counties.

Most areas will stay dry overnight with light breezes in northern New Mexico.

Sunday will bring dry and hot weather across the state. Albuquerque will reach the upper 90s, and temperatures could exceed 100 degrees in eastern and southeastern New Mexico.

Heat advisories are in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday for Chaves and Eddy counties. Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses.

Forecasters said people should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

Monday will stay mainly dry and hot with highs in the upper 90s in Albuquerque and over 100 degrees in southeast New Mexico.

Small chances for an afternoon shower or storm could begin Tuesday or Wednesday and continue through later next week for parts of central and eastern New Mexico.

Most of the state will still stay dry and hot through that period.
