Rising soprano Angelica Zafiris shares stage with Greek star Dimitris Basis in debut

Emerging Australian-Greek soprano Angelica Zafiris has made her professional debut alongside renowned Greek singer Dimitris Basis in a concert celebrating Hellenic music and culture in Perth.

The performance at the Taryn Fiebig Concert Hall saw Zafiris join Basis and the West Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) in a symphonic program blending classical orchestration with Greek musical traditions.

Conducted by Jon Tooby, the concert featured orchestral arrangements by George Doukas and bouzouki accompaniment from Themelis Samarkos.

For Zafiris, the appearance marked a significant milestone, sharing the stage with one of Greece’s most established contemporary vocalists. Basis, who has enjoyed a career spanning more than three decades, is widely known for interpreting the works of some of Greece’s most celebrated composers and lyricists.

Organisers said the concert aimed to showcase both the richness of Greek musical heritage and the emergence of a new generation of performers within the diaspora.

Zafiris, who began her musical training with the West Australian Young Voices Choir, has built a foundation in classical singing while also developing a repertoire that includes traditional Greek music. Her performance drew praise from audience members and supporters, who described her debut as an example of the growing strength of young Greek-Australian talent.

The collaboration also highlighted Basis’s longstanding engagement with Greek communities abroad and his support for emerging artists.

The concert formed part of broader efforts to promote Greek culture through music in Australia, bringing together established and emerging performers in a program that bridged generations and musical traditions.
