Horry Legion Baseball has new players, revamped league | Sports

Horry Legion Baseball faces an abundance of questions this summer with an influx of new players and opponents.

And longtime coach Jason Gore is working to make it all fit.

“We’ve got a lot of uncertainty right now,” Gore said. “We haven’t had a lot of practices with everybody. I’m still missing a lot of guys in and out with graduation parties and stuff like that.”

It’s pretty much a new team. There are four returning players — Coleman Strickland, Mac Duncan, Mason Fowler and Logan Cook. Luke Kessler is back from the 2024 team after not playing last summer.

Then there’s a drastically revamped League 1. The Beaufort Ospreys, Moncks Corner and Summerville are in while Sumter moves to the Midlands. Rounding out the league are familiar rivals Florence and Manning-Santee.

“We had a couple of teams drop out at the last minute,” Gore said. “They kind of combined the Charleston league with our league.”

That means more travel — and a little creativity. Horry Legion will play a Saturday doubleheader in Beaufort.

They’ll also play two games with Summerville at the College of Charleston.

“It’s a beautiful place to play,” Gore said. “That’s kind of a neutral site for both of us.”

As for having to deal with so much turnover, Gore shrugs it off. He’s seen it before.

“We lost a lot of faces last year and a lot of guys that are tough to replace,” Gore said. “But the new guys coming in will step in and fill those shoes. We’re going to continue to play baseball.”

One of the new guys is Waccamaw’s Christian Galasso, a catcher/first baseman who didn’t take long to show out by smashing a three-run homer in Horry Legion’s second game of the season, a 14-2 rout of Moncks Corner.

“He’s going to kind of set the tone for us,” Gore said.

Strickland played for Atlantic Collegiate Academy’s 2A state runner-up team and Kessler was a standout for St. James.

“The three of them are going to anchor the top of our lineup,” Gore said.
