LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two people were arrested on Monday following an investigation into synthetic mushroom products being sold at local smoke shops.
In May 2025, deputies with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office responded to an overdose involving a minor who had consumed mushroom gummies purchased from a local smoke shop.
According to the sheriff’s office, the overdose raised concerns about products being marketed and sold as legal substances, while potentially containing dangerous or controlled ingredients.
The investigation focused on synthetic mushroom products believed to contain controlled substances.
As part of the investigation, the sheriff’s office issued cease-and-desist letters in November 2025 to multiple smoke shops in Lancaster County selling the products.
In January, investigators purchased additional products from Cloud 9 Smoke Shop, located near 11th and G streets.
The products were sent to a lab for testing, and despite a previous warning, tested positive for acetylpsilocin, a Schedule I controlled substance.
On Monday, authorities arrested 44-year-old Mirzah Meskin and 38-year-old Khalil Meskin, both employees of the smoke shop, who were involved in the sale of the products.
Both were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
“The removal of these items from local smoke shops helps reduce access to dangerous drugs and sends a clear message that those who choose to distribute illegal substances will be held accountable,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
