AUGUSTA — The city of Augusta is moving ahead of schedule with the Broad Street Improvement Project in downtown Augusta, but the changes will effect parking wells and downtown parking.
City crews closed the inside lanes between 6th and 7th streets to complete the next phase of median work, according to a media release from the city of Augusta.
The city said as part of the construction work, the existing parking well will be demolished and rebuilt. Once the construction is complete on that segment of the project, parking to the area will be restored.
The work is expected to last approximately two months and motorists should expect lane restrictions. Motorists are encouraged to use caution, follow posted signage and allow extra time for travel.
During the construction work, free parking is available with no time restrictions. Parking is available at Lot A on 116 James Brown Blvd., Lot B at 865 Reynolds St. and the Augusta Museum of History parking lot.
The lot at the museum will be open to the public through June 20 from noon to 3 p.m., June 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and June 27 from noon to 4 p.m.
Parking will also be available at the 9th Street Parking Deck, along with lots on Ellis Street and Reynolds Street.
The city is also encouraging visitors to use designated pedestrian crosswalks, be mindful of temporary sidewalk closures and heavy equipment in active work zones.
