Mogadishu Under Fire: Somalia’s Political Crisis Erupts Into Open Warfare as International Alarm Grows

Mogadishu (WDN) Somalia’s capital descended further into uncertainty on Wednesday as armed confrontations entered a second consecutive day, exposing the depth of the country’s political crisis and raising fears of a broader breakdown in security. Fighting erupted across several districts of Mogadishu as forces aligned with the federal government clashed with security personnel loyal to opposition leaders and former senior officials.

The violence has triggered alarm among Somali citizens, opposition figures, and international partners, who fear that the country may be entering one of its most dangerous political confrontations in recent years. As fighting intensified, reports emerged that prominent traditional elders and community leaders became trapped inside the residence of Member of Parliament Mohamed Abukar Ali Jaafar, where fierce clashes had been reported since Wednesday.

Among those reportedly caught in the area were respected elders including the Murusade Ugaas, the Mudulood Ugaas, the Mudulood Imam, and veteran elder Mohamed Hassan Haad, alongside other influential community figures. Security officials were said to be working to establish safe passage for the elders, who were unable to leave due to heavy gunfire and ongoing exchanges of fire between government-backed forces and security personnel loyal to former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

The exact nature of the evacuation efforts remains unclear, although sources indicated that negotiations were underway to remove the elders from the combat zone without further escalation

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo strongly condemned the military operations targeting opposition leaders and former state officials, accusing the administration of using state institutions and security forces to settle political disputes.

“The attack carried out against the residences of former national leaders and the ongoing military operations in Mogadishu represent a serious threat to statehood, peace, and the stability of the capital,” Farmaajo said in a statement. He further argued that the unfolding events demonstrate what he described as the misuse of government power for political purposes and an attempt to maintain authority through coercive means rather than constitutional consensus.

.International Community Calls for Restraint

The growing violence has prompted renewed concern from international stakeholders. Diplomatic sources indicate that senior representatives of the United Nations, the African Union, and several Western governments have called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities and urged all parties to exercise restraint.

International officials have reportedly expressed concern over the use of force against individuals exercising what they describe as constitutionally protected rights to peaceful assembly and political expression. They have also warned that continued confrontation could plunge Somalia into a wider political and security crisis at a time when the country is already confronting significant governance challenges.

The escalating violence has reportedly forced some residents to flee affected neighborhoods, fearing that the clashes could spread further across the capital.

Fighting Expands Across Mogadishu

Residents awoke Wednesday morning to the sound of sustained gunfire and explosions echoing across multiple districts. The Barmuuda area of Hodan and Howlwadaag districts remained among the most heavily contested zones, with forces aligned with the government facing off against fighters loyal to former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and other opposition figures.

Meanwhile, heavy clashes were also reported in the Marina area and along roads leading toward Lido Beach, where forces supporting former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed reportedly maintained defensive positions.

Images circulating from the area appeared to show a government armored vehicle destroyed during the fighting, although independent verification remains difficult amid the ongoing security situation. Neither side has released official casualty figures, and the full human toll of the confrontation remains unknown.

Airport Operations Disrupted

The security crisis has also affected critical infrastructure. Operations at Aden Adde International Airport were disrupted as authorities suspended or delayed several scheduled flights due to the deteriorating security environment.

Hundreds of passengers traveling to and from Mogadishu experienced significant disruptions, with uncertainty remaining over when normal flight operations will resume. As Mogadishu enters its second day of armed confrontation, fears are growing that Somalia may be approaching a decisive moment in its political trajectory.

The clashes underscore the urgent need for dialogue, compromise, and a political settlement capable of preventing further violence. Without a credible process to reduce tensions and rebuild confidence among competing political actors, analysts warn that the current crisis could evolve into a broader national confrontation with far-reaching consequences for Somalia’s fragile institutions and security gains.

The coming days are likely to determine whether the country moves toward political reconciliation or slides deeper into instability at a time when national unity is needed more than ever.
