Garry Nkombo charged with assault after nomination day altercation

FORMER Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo has been charged with two counts of assault for allegedly attacking two United Party for National Development members during party nominations.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said Nkombo was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm at Mazabuka Police Station. The alleged offenses occurred May 20 at Mazabuka Civic Centre.

Namalongo said the incidents happened around 9:25 a.m. May 20, when two complainants went to the civic center to support Vincent Lilanda, who was filing nomination papers for Mazabuka Central Constituency on the UPND ticket.

In the first report, Bilden Shaloba, 50, of Waterfalls in Lusaka, alleged Nkombo and his supporters assaulted him. Shaloba sustained a swollen left hand, back pain and general body pain, and reported losing 20,000 kwacha during the incident.

In the second report, Emmanuel Mweemba, 36, of Nkabika Compound in Mazabuka, alleged Nkombo and his supporters struck him with unknown objects. Mweemba sustained a swollen right little finger and swollen right arm.

Namalongo said Nkombo was summoned by call-out and reported to police June 1 at 2:10 p.m., where a warn-and-caution statement was recorded. He has since been released on police bond.

Last month, Nkombo was involved in a verbal and physical altercation with former party members during nominations. The incident was captured and circulated on social media.
